Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Tasting

Host Winery: Talley Vineyards

Aubert de Villaine, Co-director, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Karen MacNeil, Moderator - Author, The Wine Bible

Aubert de Villaine spoke so eloquently, it was like poetry.

I will never forget the stories and he used to desribe the wines.

Great wine is made in the vineyard.

The Wines!

Everyone was speechless! There are no words to describe these wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the finest Pinot Noir in the world! Then, there's the Montrachet!

These are the finest young Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines in recent memory.

Even at this early stage,

it may be the finest Echezeaux and Romanée-St.-Vivant the Domaine has ever produced.

Certainly the finest I have ever had the pleasure of tasting!

The wines were also poured at a second tasting the day before at

The Cliffs Resort at Shell Beach in slightly warmer conditions.

Aubert de Villaine said "They tasted more opulent the day before.

Today they show more purity."

He believes it is temperature related.

Also tasted, 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux

not even close...

1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux

ditto...

Pisoni 1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001 Estate Pinot Noir! = 5Attababys!

The Pisoni Vineyard is located in the Santa Lucia Highlands near Monterey, CA.

Gary Pisoni and his family have grown some of the most beautiful fruit I have ever seen!

His son Jeff is the winemaker, who has been making the wine at

Peter Micheal Winery until the new Pisoni Winery is finished.

This is one of the best Pinot Noirs in California!

Garys' Vineyard on the left and Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir on the right!

Pinot Noir juice from the Pisoni Vineyard. Pinot Noir is not a pink wine...

Pinot Noir is a red grape and a red wine, right?

So, why then does the juice look pink?

All grapes have clear juice inside.

The color of a wine is determined by the grape skin.

When you hear about a cold soak,

juice to skin contact or great extraction

or color it is all about getting the most out of the skins of the grape.

By the way, the taste was magnificent!

My favorite Kistler 1999 Occidental Vineyard Cuvee Elizabeth Pinot Noir = 5Attababys!

Other than the similarity in the labels,

these three wineries below all grow their own grapes with obsession,

employing natural winemaking techniques with minimal intervention

and bottle unfined and unfiltered.

Miniscule quantities through thinning and dropping fruit

create extroadinary wine from three fanatical Pinot Noir producers!

One in Burgundy, France

another in Russian River Valley California

and a third in Willamette Valley, Oregon.

Thomas 2000 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir = 3Attababys!

The similarity in the labels in no coincidence!

Mimicking the great Domaine Leroy is the greatest

compliment a winery can give!

Bright red cherries and rich spicy soil with perfect balance.

Miniscule amounts, great concentration.

Although the Domaine Leroy is better than the Kistler

and the Thomas Pinot Noir...

it's also approximately twice the price of the Kistler...

and four times more then the Thomas!

Also, much harder to find...

Still, you gotta love what these two wineries are doing!

Martinelli 1997, 1998, 1999 Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! Wow! This is the best Pinot Noir from the 1998 vintage that I have tasted. It is also one of the best Pinot Noirs ever produced in California! The sweet nose unfolds with dark black cherries and violets. It flows ovc tongue like silk with flavors of black cherries, violets, smoke, and coffee. This wine finishes oozing cranberries. The 1999 is even better. What can I say? Helen Turley does it again. To pair it with Rotiserie Duck Stuffed with Apples and Herbs is out of control!

Martinelli 1997, 1998, 1999 Martinelli Vineyard Reserve Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! Outstanding wine from the Reserve bottling in 1998. The 1997 Reserve was even better. By the way, the 1997 non-Reserve won a blind tasting conducted at a Joseph George wine shop last year against the best names in Pinot Noir made in California. This wine is a bargain. The smells of dark chery fruit and exotic spice rise from the glass. Dark thick flavors of red and black cherries, soil and smoky vanilla flow over my tongue. Perfect balance. I don't want to swallow it. Long finish with a kiss of oak, acid and tannin. Helen Turley does it again!

Sanford 1999 Pinot Noir = 3Attababys! $20.00 Wonderful perfume of strawberries and a hint of cinnamon on the nose. Forward fruit flavors with a hint of strawberries and spice on the palate, a round mouth feel. Nice finish. WineChief says, 1997, 1998 and 1999 Pinot Noirs from Littorai are excellent! WineChief says, a sure sign of a great wine is simple! It's gone quickly, the label has a wine streak down the front of the bottle, and you fight over the last glass! It happened with this Littorai Pinot Noir!

Ted Lemon, owner/winemaker at Littorai is brilliant! He studied in Burgundy, France for many years and it shows. These wines simply ooze fruit. They are unfined and unfiltered and never racked. He uses natural yeast, and sources grapes from designated coastal vineyards. The name Littorai, translates to "the coasts." Each wine exhibits a sense of place while still maintaining the delicious house style. These wines are very fruit forward with a round mouth feel. A mixture of new and used barrels is preferred here. The result is nothing short of amazing! Get on the mailing list ASAP. If you see these wines on a wine list at a restaurant, try one! You will not be disappointed.

1999 Littorai Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! WineChief says, one smell of this wine and you immediately know this is very serious wine. The lovely aromas hint of strawberries, brown sugar, vanilla, and spice on the nose continue to the palate as I taste this wine. As it flows over my tongue the flavors matched the aromas, a rare virtue only the finest wines possess. As I swallow, I realize the near perfect balance this wine exhibits, then a I sensed a touch of acidity and just a hint of tannin in the back of my throat.

1999 Littorai Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! WineChief says, the nose on this one is even more alluring. Hints of cherries, raspberries, soil, and vanilla come up out of the glass, carrying the same flavors across my tongue with a more tannic backbone and slightly more acid on the finish than the Savoy. The oak is not as apparent in these wines as other Pinot Noir producers that use all new French oak. In fact it is so well balanced into the wine that one rarely notices it. A masterful touch from the winemaker. One of the better Hirsch Vineyard efforts I have tasted.

1999 Littorai Thieriot Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! WineChief says, the nose is even more intense on this one! Hints of black cherries, smoke, vanilla, Asian spices and wet soil carry through on my palette. Darker flavors than the Hirsch. As I swish the wine around in my mouth it opens up into a seductive fruit explosion with a wonderful round mouth feel and a very long finish of all of the flavors finely balanced with a hint of acidity and tannin. By now I am sensing the "sense of place" Ted Lemon is talking about in each of these wines.

1999 Littorai One Acre Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys! WineChief says, I have arrived! Wow, all of the wines combined and more! A nose of black and red cherries, raspberry jam, strawberry liqueur, earth, forest, terroir, vanilla, leather, Asian spice, rose petals, and something I can't describe erupted from the glass. As I taste, the wine it coated my tongue, teeth, lips with all of the same flavors. I didn't want to swallow it. I must have held it in my mouth for over a minute. No one was talking. We were moaning! Once I finally decide to let her go down... more flavors started to come up from the back of my throat! The harmony of tannin, acid, oak, and fruit create a long wonderful finish. This is one of the best and relatively unknown Pinot Noir vineyards in California. Bravo to Ted Lemon for finding it and making such a grand wine from it. This wine is not to be missed. After taking in all of the wines, I went back through them in the reverse order. I was amazed how each of them had gotten even better in the hour we were tasting. I was even more amazed that each wine had changed and started to become better and better, and indistinguishable from the others. They were all great. Which one is this? I asked each time I re-sampled a different vineyard. I couldn't tell the difference between them. Ted smiled and said, It happened to me the other day. Rare, fascinating and a tribute to great vineyards and great winemaking. Bravo to Ted Lemon of Littorai Winery!

Calera 1996 Selleck Vineyard Pinot Noir=5Attababys! Wow! This wine is wonderful! Calera is back! Paired with Duck Confit with a Port Reduction, Potatoes, Snap Peas and Carrots is sensual.

Josh Jensen, owner and winemaker Calera Wine Company conducted a blind tasting for what Josh called "a group of Heavy Hitters!" Troy Bunnell of Coyote Canyon Winery troy@coyotecanyonwines.com, Brian Overhauser, chef at Packer Lake Lodge chefover@aol.com , and Jean-Jacques Hegner of Le Bistro Bourguignon Wine Bar and Restaurant 8, rue Monge 21200 Beaune France 03 80 22 23 24 jjhegner@wanadoo.fr and yours truly!  The wines were all in a brown bag and simply labeled ABC and D. Josh simply asked us to tell him which wine we liked best. All of us agreed that we liked "B" or "D" the best except for Brian who liked "A" the best. No one liked "C" because it was obviously oxidized. In the end the Calera 1996 Reed Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys!  "B" and the Calera 1996 Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir = 4Attababys!  "D" were chosen as the two favorites of the blind tasting. What was in the brown bag marked "A"? The Domaine de la Romanee-Conti 1996 Richebourg! Yes, to be fair the Domaine de la Romanee Conti 1996 Richebourg = 5Attababys! does need 10 years of proper cellaring to show its stuff, but the 1996 Calera Pinot Noir is that good! What was in the brown bag marked "C"? The Domaine Drouhin 1996 Oregon Pinot Noir. It's too bad the Drouhin was oxidized, oh well that's how it goes sometimes.
